Photography Journal — Preparation Guide

The Art of Preparation

How intentional space creates the most authentic portraits.

Session Planning

To capture your most authentic self, the preparation process is just as important as the shoot itself. Here are the five key elements to consider before we meet on the shores or in the forests of the Pacific Northwest.

1. Wardrobe & Textures

Choose natural fabrics like linen, wool, or cotton. These materials interact beautifully with natural light and add a tactile depth to your photos. Avoid heavy patterns or large logos that might distract from your expression.

2. The Environment

Whether we are shooting in the rugged forests of Duncan or the misty shores of Tofino, consider the terrain. I always recommend comfortable footwear that allows you to feel grounded and move freely through the landscape.

3. Mindset & Presence

The best images happen when you are present. Arriving 15 minutes early to sit by the water or walk among the trees is vital to shedding the rush of the day and entering a state of quiet contemplation.

4. Hair & Skin

Keep it simple and true to how you look every day. Hydration is key—drinking plenty of water in the 48 hours leading up to your session will make your skin glow naturally and reflect your inner vitality.

5. Trust the Process

My goal is to capture you "As I Am." Don't worry about posing. We will let the moments unfold naturally, guided by the light and the quiet dialogue between us. Trust that your truth is more beautiful than any orchestrated pose.
