My Way of Seeing
I am not looking to take a photo; I am looking to receive a moment. Having spent years exploring Vancouver Island—from Tofino’s mystical mists to the ancient groves of Cathedral Grove—I’ve realized that the rawest beauty lies not in the landscape, but in the truth of those who inhabit it.
As I Am Photography was born from a simple observation: we spend our lives wearing masks. Here, I invite you to set them aside. My approach is an outstretched hand toward your authenticity.
1. The Conversation
Everything begins with a dialogue, long before I take my camera out of the bag. To me, a successful session is one where we are no longer strangers by the time we start. I take the time to listen, to understand what moves you, and what you wish to tell the world.
2. Embracing Uncertainty
Let’s be honest: standing before a lens is an act of pure vulnerability. That slight apprehension you feel—I don’t ignore it; I welcome it. My role is to be your anchor, creating a safe space where uncertainty becomes a gateway to sincerity.
3. Intentional Space
Vancouver Island is more than just a background; it is a character in your story. I choose every location with surgical intention. Whether it is a rocky Pacific coast or the hushed silence of a forest, the environment must resonate with who you are.
4. The Authentic Moment
The essence of As I Am holds in one word: Truth. I prioritize raw emotion over staged perfection. I track natural movement, an escaping glance, or a silent reflection. These micro-moments are the heartbeat of a portrait.
5. The Ethics of the Wild: Leave No Trace
As a fine art nature and drone photographer, the wilderness is not just my studio—it is a sacred sanctuary that demands absolute protection. True artistic freedom comes with a profound responsibility toward the ecosystems we explore and document. This is why my creative process is strictly aligned with the principles of Leave No Trace environmental ethics.
Whether piloting my drone over sensitive coastal shorelines or capturing the quiet, misty giants of the West Coast forests, my presence remains invisible to the landscape. Every expedition is guided by intentional visual awareness: respecting wildlife habitats, minimizing ground impact, avoiding flight disturbances during nesting seasons, and packing out everything we bring in. We do not conquer nature to take a striking photograph; we wait with humility for the light to reveal it.
A Visual Legacy
Choosing my approach means deciding that your image deserves more than a fleeting filter. It is an investment in a visual legacy that celebrates your journey, your victories, and your vulnerability. Together, we will create images that are felt.
